It’s been an incredible few months for Naomi and I. Firstly, we said goodbye to Taiwan, a place which will always hold a very special place in our hearts and was very hard to leave. Thank you to all the amazing people we met and to Taiwan for all the memories –  we will be back to see you again!

After putting my feet back firmly on the ground in the UK, I swiftly pedalled off to Europe for two months in order to complete a long-term goal to do some of France’s finest climbs, spend some time with family and reflect upon the last few years before embarking on our next adventure in Manchester.

Taiwan offered me the chance to further my teaching in many ways, evaluate different approaches and regularly improve my understanding of my own pedagogy alongside others as I learnt from passionate educators from around the world. There were many points of challenge both from my leadership and classroom teaching roles but these experiences have only furthered my desire to improve students’ learning and I look forward to bringing these into new roles moving forward.

The past two months have also helped me to realise that the classroom can become your world and it’s important to take the opportunity to step out once in a while. It is important to evaluate your mindset and only fair on your students to consider where your motivation lies.

Whilst currently reading Cleverlands by @lucy_crehan, it has been enlightening to consider education around the globe – reflecting on my own experiences of approaches and cultures in Taiwan, but also of Lucy’s and others from Finland to Singapore, and considering what could help students in the UK. I’ll be reviewing this further in my next post and am excited to take this into my next role! We must challenge our own mindsets before we can expect students to find success in their own.
