Checking In. And the Awe of SNOW!!

We’ve had some cool successes over the first couple of weeks but today served as a reminder to how far there is still to go to truly grasp the interest of my students. SNOW!! This was my reaction as we saw snow in Taipei, on top of Mt. Datun. For some students, this was the first time they had ever seen snow and their reaction was priceless. How can we, as teachers, capture the awe of snow!?

As a nervous but keen learner, I am always thinking, am I doing this right? I set out only a couple of weeks ago with these goals. Let’s see how it’s going.

1. To question my practise and challenge improvement for the students in front of me – Searching for new more fun and creative outcomes for my students has changed the planning of two curriculums and thrown the children in the deep end – so to speak – and boy have they come good!

2. To attempt and pursue the new. What have I not tried yet and how could it work? – I’m seeking to get a class YouTube channel off the ground and public Seesaw journal with the kids help (hopefully I can sustain their interest). iMovie and green screens have produced two eye-catching pieces of work for each child which they can be proud of!

3. To contemplate the way technology is moulding our students future! How can I and WE fit into that? – Kids are certainly way more capable than we give them credit for and have surprised me and even themselves with their problem solving skills.

What next?

A few things to consider:

  • How can I maintain the students’ interest in the YouTube project?
  • How do I help the students see the long term value in their learning through tech?
  • How can we, as a Year 6 team, incorporate technology effectively without increasing workload?
  • What could be the next SNOW!! moment?
